BEHIND THE ART

Jen Joyce Ackerson is a Pittsburgh-based artist, counselor, educator, and board-certified art therapist whose work blends creativity, memory, place, and preservation.

Jen has exhibited artwork in local group shows, including Art All Night and the Fort Pitt Museum, and has collaborated with Pittsburgh businesses and organizations such as Wigle Whiskey and Kimpton Hotel Monaco Pittsburgh. In 2019, she was selected for Papyrus’ Artist in Residence Program.

Her creative work is rooted in an appreciation for story, connection, and the emotional meaning we attach to places and objects.

Jen received her BA in Psychology and Studio Arts from Kent State University and her MA in Art Therapy with a specialization in Counseling from Seton Hill University. She earned her PhD in Counselor Education and Supervision from Waynesburg University. In addition to her art practice, Jen works as a Clinical Director and is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Board Certified Art Therapist.

In addition to watercolor and ink work, Jen creates custom resin flower preservation pieces using real flowers from weddings, memorials, and other meaningful life moments. She especially loves preserving bridal bouquets, transforming wedding flowers into glass-like resin keepsakes that can be displayed and cherished for years to come.

Each floral preservation piece begins with carefully drying the flowers in silica gel before arranging and casting them in resin, a process that combines art, science, patience, and care.

Jen is currently available for limited custom commission work, including city skyline artwork, meaningful place-based pieces, and resin flower preservation.
